About

Sinhala Calendar publishes the Poya (full moon) calendar for Sri Lanka, the Sinhala & Tamil New Year date, every gazetted public holiday and festival observed nationally, and daily sun, moon and lunar-day (tithi) timings for Colombo.

How this is put together

The sun, moon, tithi and day-period (Rahu Kalam and similar) timings are calculated, not copied from a printed almanac — the same Drik method (Swiss Ephemeris, sidereal zodiac) used across this publisher’s other calendar sites, computed for Colombo.

The Sinhala & Tamil New Year date and moment come from the same calculation: it is the instant the Sun crosses into Aries (Mesha/Vishu sankranti), which is exactly the moment Sri Lanka’s Sinhala and Tamil communities mark together as the New Year.

Festival and public-holiday dates are different. They are not computed here. Sri Lanka’s public holiday calendar has a single recognised authority — the Government Printing Department’s official annual calendar — so every year’s full list (Poya, New Year, national, Hindu, Christian and Muslim) is taken directly from that calendar (via its published reporting), not derived. Where a date can be independently checked — Poya days against the lunar calculation, and the Hindu festivals against the same calendar engine that governs Tamil Nadu’s festival dates — we do that cross-check, but the gazette is always the source, never the calculation.

One thing we deliberately do not compute: Islamic (Hijri) dates for Sri Lanka. The underlying calendar engine can produce a Hijri date, but it is sourced for India’s moon-sighting committee, which can differ by a day from Sri Lanka’s own. So Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and Milad-un-Nabi here are always the gazette’s own published date, never a calculated one.

The auspicious-time (nekath) details published separately each year for the New Year — the inauspicious transition period, and the right times for specific rituals — are not yet reproduced on this site.
